I guess Octane standalone 1.20 won't support my GPU...is there any fix about it or i just have to upgrade it to a newer version?

mm, Maxwell support (750) in Octane was added with 1.5 or 1.55 something (not sure). So I guess You should go for that in order just to be able to use new Maxwell cards (970/980). However even very new builds are not yet optimised, so don't expect very good performance out of them just yet. If You need t work now, the best deal is to get older card =) sorry, for bad news =)

FYI, 1.5 is a free upgrade, so you really should just upgrade.

I have also just discovered that my shiny new graphics card a gtx 970 is not supported in the student version, a shame as I chose to upgrade to nvidia over ati with octane in mind.

I'd certainly have appreciated Otoy making this known somewhere so I didn't spend till 4.30 in the morning making sure the fault wasn't somewhere in my system, checking drivers were up to date and trawling though the manual.

it is known topic that is widely discussed in Licenced user forum ( on more resin to have licence =) I believe if You can buy such card it would be wise to buy normal licence & enjoy using OctaneRender =) Devs are trying to optimise 2.x for Maxwell cards it already works better that before, but they still trying to make some changes.

Overall if You bought the card not so long ago & want to be able to work fluidly with Octane without buying a licence, simply return Your card (You probably have 14-30 days period depending where You live) & get something Kepler based 780 (3 or 6GB), for almost the same price or even 770/670 (4gb =) they will wok nicely =)

or simply buy used cards for fracture of original cost =) there some users in this forum who sell the cards they no longer use because of upgrade =) or You can go to any site look for them, as so gamers change their "old" stuff once new is released =) so, there are options.

Thanks for your suggestions and advice,

Sadly my budget doesn't stretch as far as another £300 on top of what I just spent on my card (too long ago to simply return it) so no licence for me. I can't even get a seccondary card as I only have the one PCI slot. I don't make any money rendering as I'm just an architecture student who was looking to learn some new (to me) and very promising looking software.

It would just have been nice if they could place a line of txt on the student version page next to where they warn of older cards incompatibility this would have saved me a lot of time for next to no effort from them.

I'll use the demo for now and maybe in future the student license will move to a newer version.

well, You might need to wait quite a bit for 2.x to become demo version, so I wouldn't count on that =) if You don't want to spend more funds, nor buy licences try to change the card with someOne online, Yeah, You might get less expensive model in return, but at least it will work as good as possible now =)

I can agree with You, that OTOY could make more effort to explain certain things, but I believe they are busy coding. As mention forum itself is a nice way to educate Yourself about these topics =) with time You'll probably find more & more blog covering certain aspects of GPU technologies =) but for now this forum has insane value if You spend some time reading it =)

I have to admit sometimes information is lacking a little bit. I'm not too lost since I've learned on other renderers before and I would say Octane is much simpler to use. Good thing if you ask me! We just need a bad ass user manual and we'll be good to go hehe!
