Black screen

Hello,
When I try to run any 3D game on G2 instance through ORBX, I am only getting black screen. Why is that? What am I doing wrong? cmd.exe and notepad.exe work fine, but not much more...
Best regards,

Were you able to get the black screen issued fixed? If not, can you tell me a bit more about what you're trying to run and how you're running it?

Hello,

I have the same problem in the AMI. I tried several things like START=<PATH> or APP(LICATION)=<PID> to get the game on the screenport. I already tried to change settings in nview-options like disabling multiple desktops or switching windows to the orbx-screen (which wasn't listed in nview :-( ). DESKTOP=true didn't changed the black screen of the orbx-desktop. It's really bad, that it not uses the default desktop... Any help would be appreciated. ThX a lot!!

Florian

Hello,

I am having the same issue in the Amazon AMI. I tried to launch a game through "START=<PATH>" and a running game through APP(LICATION)=<PID>, but the screen left black. Getting a desktop-view with DESKTOP=true didn't changed anything. I tried to move the app with nview, but the orbx is not listed there. Disabling multiple desktops in nview changed nothing, too. Would be great if someone knows how to change!

Florian

If you're looking for a full desktop experience, you may want to look at our Workstation AMI (https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B00FGB3528/), not our Console AMI.

The console AMI is designed to provide a single application in a semi-isolated environment, and allows limited interaction with the underlying system. If you want to start a single application using the console AMI, you can change the shell of the user by modifying the following registry key, which will dictate the app that gets started on boot. Be sure to restart after making the change:

Code: Select all
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-4051205647-1063257129-1511338973-1001\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Shell

Still doesn't work. Tried to run multiple free 3D games (I'll attach full list tomorrow). By running cmd.exe and then running the game executable... but nothing appeared. When I try to run directly through url, only black screen.

A list of games would be helpful. Do you get any kind of response at all when you try to run the games, or does nothing happen?

I did not manage to get the list, as that instance was terminated and deleted, but I tried new ones:

Nitronic Rush
FlightGear v2.0.0
Warface

None of them worked... nothing happens. Just like it wouldn't run at all. It doesn't even show on process list. When I run those from VNC, they work fine.

PS. Maybe something is not configured? I just installed Radmin on that machine and after connect getting black screen too... nothing appears...

Edit: I did manage to run Mad Cars, but it freezes all the times... same with some other games that do show anything... they simply freeze after run or in menu.

I tried all 3 games and was able to get both Nitronic Rush and Warface to run without any problems. FlightGear v2 had some permission issues, but I think it would work with a little tweaking...

Are you trying to run the games from RDP? The games must be launched in the user session - they cannot be launched by the "Administrator" user and show up through ORBX.

I would suggest modifying the registry key I posted earlier and changing "blankshell.bat" to "cmd.exe", then rebooting. That will give you a command line that is GPU-enabled, which should allow you to debug further.

I run it through:

http://aws.otoy.com/?connect=//<ip>:8090/?NOCRYPTO=1;STATUS=1;AUTOLOCK=0;WAN=12;START=cmd.exe;GUID=<guid>

So basically it should be the same as you say. But they simply don't work... nothing appears. And Mega Race freezes all the time. In Menu. I can give you access and you can check it yourself... but we have to decide when, as it's being paid per hour.

How do you install them? Through RDP? Maybe that is the problem?
