im new here but ive been reading this forums for a while, but ive some questions, maybe silly, but need to be clear.
Ive seen that Blender plug-in will be "free" next year, am i right? shall i buy it now or wait? if i buy the "Enterprise Standalone Edition + single DCC Plug-in (without All-Access)" i got the plugin forever, or do i have to pay it again through 1 year?

im very interested on Octane.

appreciate any kind answer

 :?:

If you use 2 GPUs or less, and don't need anything beyond V4 (i.e. the 2018/2019 roadmap features) the free version coming early next year has you covered.

I purchased a 1 year AA Annual Extension on the 24th only because OTOY, at the time, stated that owning a perpetual license past v4 would no longer be possible. (Something I wasn't too happy about)... But now I've come back to see that suddenly Rent-to-Own has become an option for people who pay for 3 years upfront.

My personal issue is that I was only able to afford the 1 year extension... But now, with this sudden change right after my purchase, I feel somewhat swindled... I can't afford the $597 upfront. But I would have rather had the money I did spend apply towards owning a perpetual license, instead of just a 1 year subscription... Will there be any leeway for me, or somebody in my position, that allows for someone to maybe pay for 3 extensions at each renewal time instead? And, as long as it's done consecutively, end up with a perpetual license at that point?... I know the FAQ says that people who bought a 1-2 year extension can contact support and change it to 3 year rent-to-own. But my financial situation won't allow me to do that for a good while.

So my basic question is will there be any middle ground for people like me who can't afford 3 years upfront, but wants to pay into eventual perpetual license ownership?... Or have I just ultimately thrown my money into the wind?

Thanks.

I've been combing through to find the answer to this, so sorry if this has already been answered!!

For existing Octane 3 license owners (non subscribers), if we do the free upgrade to V4, will our V3 license still function as normal, or will the V4 license somehow replace this? We would like to upgrade, but are worried because we have existing jobs that may need to be rendered in earlier versions in the future.

Thanks!

Over 10GE+ - yes the 200 limit is fine (we have 200 GPU limit already on our datacenter and in special builds since V3). On less than 10GE, which is what most have, we currently have a more conservative default set to 40 as of now (which should be fine over normal LAN). When and if anyone reaches this 40 GPU count please let us know and help us test this a bit further on your systems before we push the count any higher.

Thanks. Using 20 slave GPUs, our artist workstations sustain around 600Mb/s inbound traffic, so I think your estimate is accurate.

Yes - we will let 1/2 year plans sidegrade to 3 for perpetual license within a reasonable timeframe after purchase. This is TBD - but feedback like yours is very important in helping us get this right.

Hi Jules,

I have a question regarding plug-in licences for "All Access" subscribers who have existing Standalone/Plug-in combo licences.

When I upgraded our licences to 'All Access', our licence manager indicated when then had 2x Standalone Licences, 2x ArchiCAD Plug-in Licences AND 2x "All Access" Plug-in licences.

Since this has dropped back to just the base 2x Standalone "All Access" and 2x ArchiCAD Plug-in licences.

What the licence manager initially showed made sense, because if we had only purchased Octane Standalone Licences and put them on "All Access", we would have picked up 2 'All Access" plug-in licences. Essentially, as it now appears we are penalised for being existing plug-in licence holders, compared to someone buying Octane Standalone today and putting them onto "All Access".

This may not seem significant at first, but once the Standalone 2 GPU Free Tier becomes available, having those 2 'extra' plug-in "All Access" licences has a pretty significant value to us.

Cheers, Dan.

This sounds like a bug (which is why we’re giving ourselves to Q1 to roll this out). The only extra thing on AA this week should be the second standalone/slave node coming shortly. The plug-ins will come later, but I don’t think we have released any even in testing yet. I will check.

Just saw from the facebook page there is now at least some option for a permanent purchase which I appreciate.

Echoing Jonjambons comments as also having bought the 1 year all access - the 3 year upfront purchase price, particularly with a fairly unclear outcome in terms of which version / features that would represent is a bit off putting.

I love your product the free upgrade to V4 is very much appreciated and the speed that it gives to iterate is great.
From that position could I just say please, please look at your communication routes :), you managed to take a great, generous product launch and inject bad feeling into it for some people which is painful to watch.

As you move into the subscription era can I suggest you look at the general approach that Allegorithmic take with their Substance suite. Both in community communication and a rent to own scheme.

I read through facebook and this thread for about an hour last night and I still couldn't work out my own scenario as a freelancer. So here it is:

Currently:
Have a single machine with 2x1080Ti's.
Have a $20 Subscription, which gets me standalone and the C4D plugin.

In future I'd like to:
Upgrade the machine to 2x2080Ti's or 4x2080Ti's, and ensure that I receive all the benefits of the RTX technology.
Receive regular updates to the Standalone and C4D plugin OctaneRender products, 2018.1 (V5), 2019 (V6) Etc.

For some reason I thought my subscription would continue to do these things, but it seems like I might be wrong. What are my options?

I think all of the above are fair points. Now consider the below:

Octane is updated now every few months. We have literally seen V4 stable and 20180 (V5) XB1 come out the same day, with another major version (2019 - V6) coming only months later. If this pace is going to continue (as it should), where's the clear cutoff for a perpetual licence holder to disembark from? - it's no longer delineated by version or even really by year (we have 3 major updates in 6 months , between 2 years).

The reality is that after 9 years of Octane (yes it's been that long) we and the community should concede that there is no practical perpetual licence when it comes to GPU support. Octane 2 and 3.07 (that was the latest build a little over a year ago) do not work on RTX 2080 cards, and never will. As 2080's gen cards become the norm, anyone stuck on V2 / 3.07 or is going to have a product that won't run on any new consumer GPUs.

This illustrates that Octane may - at any point / version/ update - be a just year away from needing a non-trivial upgrade to work on a new generation of GPUs, as has already happened with Turing. When this does happen, and it will - should we go back and update every possible version or release that a user may end up "owning" - depending on when a short maintenance period happens to end? 2018.1, 2019.3 etc? Or do we just ensure they are on the latest version, with the latest updates and fixes - and not waste resources going back to more and more outdated releases that are no longer years apart, but now just months apart.

Lastly - in the not too distant future we will have many features and modules which won't be baked into the core engine, but delivered online through a service that needs to be maintained and supported continuously - if it is going to operate continuously. This will eventually include LiveDB2 and auto-updates to Octane kernels and core as well (not unlike how Octane for Unity is handled today - its always updated).

None of the above means we can't snapshot Octane at key points after V4 - and offer that as a rent to own option . Now that we've committed to doing that, we will figure a way out - but there need to be some hard limits to this if we're going to stay at this pace for updates, features and releases.

As always - your feedback and thoughts are very welcome.
