I think the slow-down you experienced is because of the render priority. See here and here.

In fact, there is also performance difference between 1.2 and 1.5 and unfortunately 1.2 is faster (especially considering matte objects & alpha output). I`ll upgrade to v2.0 undoubtedly but I`ll stick to 1.21 for the scenes that don`t require new features. (GTX580`s behave reasonably the same but 780`s slow down a lot)
