.

We are delighted to share the unveiling of the “The Boy and His Robot”, allegedly the first live-action movie with visual effects that are entirely rendered by GPUs.

This film features 3D effects rendered with OctaneRender v1.20, in fact, OctaneRender was the only renderer used in production. This proves that Octane is fast enough allowing directors to make decisions about the final shot based on what they see in the viewport without relying too much on compositing. Although multi pass is still an upcoming feature in future versions of OctaneRender, a brilliant one render pass solution was hatched by the producers in order to work around Octane v1.20’s current limitation.

A lot of people mentioned the need for quick multi-pass rendering. However, in the compositing stage, I realized that with proper lighting during live production filming, and tweaking everything just by using the Octane viewport as reference, I can get a very close-to-final-image for immediate use in the compositing software. Thus skipping the need to tweak more in that stage.

We are pleased to collaborate with Richmanclub Studios and their partners for this project and we are thrilled to see the very first movie with special effects rendered entirely with OctaneRender. As independent studios and film makers like Richmanclub Studios delve into GPU rendering, they can attest to the huge improvements in artist workflow and acknowledge the time and cost savings brought by the technology in the process of rendering visual effects. This movie signals the arrival of GPU-rendering in the Film and VFX industry and we hope it will be the catalyst for more studios to use OctaneRender in their pipeline and deploy GPU-rendering in more feature films.

Thanks for working on this gamechanging renderer called Octane. It is a dream come true for a movie maker, and it will only get faster and better from here I believe!

animations are great, thanks Elvis. The goals for realism and visualization remains. Feature animations and 3D/VFX in feature films are steps further, I believe we're getting there

I agree with Elvis, animation is pretty bad. Compositing in some scenes is also very amateurish.

Modeling and rendering are nice.

Hi, thanks for dropping some feedback, will encourage everyone in the industry to step up. we've revamped the title from "Octane deployed for GPU-Rendered 3D/VFX In Feature Film" to "Case Study: Octane in feature film VFX pipeline" as this reflects more the steps taken in this area :)

More comments and feedback are welcome guys...

The skies are beautiful but the overall compositing looks weird.
Color correction, perspective and readability of some shots do not match with any concept of reality.

To be honest, it might work for some hardcore fans but for me it did not worked for one second!
Compositing and colorgrading looks unimproved. The Robotmodels seem to have a big phong angle problem.

abreukers, congrats on your project! As someone who is working with live action compositing with Octane, I understand the strugles of compositing without a multi-pass workflow. I compliment you in moving foward with GPU rendering on such a large project, and look forward to more posts like yours with compositing live action and Octane Render.

Thanks for being the first to put yourself out there on this big of a project and be an example for a VFX pipeline with Octane. One can only get better if you put yourself out there, and I applaud your efforts, can't wait to see more. I hope this can spark conversation of workflow and suggestions for the Octane and octane plugin developers so we can achieve more photoreal results in the compositing of Octane renders.

Cheers.
