"The LUA scripting is not hard and quite addictive."

Is there a user guide available for preview?

Even better could you post a few sample octane lua scripts so we can see the structure.

Found this online, and seems very interesting.

Hi there,

There's no user guide available yet.

We'll provide example scripts (with explanation) for all the modules here on the forum (there will be a new scripting forum). We'll make this public once the first release candidate is out.

cheers,
Thomas

Tugpsx wrote:Regarding the inclusion of a simple editor for LUA scripting. Years ago there was a GUI drag and drop scripting add-on for LUA that was used on PlayStation Portable and other similar console. This interface was in the public domain and could easily be added to the Octane interface to add simple scripting for dropdown of pre populated simple commands. the consoles don't have keyboards so we devised a way to select simple commands from a list and submitted them to be processed. Now im not sure how much time and effort you want to spend on this process, but since it will be an integral part to adding great functionality to Octane there may be an avenue here for a spin off group or at least community input.

For now we only provide a Lua editor in Octane. Most of us still use a keyboard I guess ;)

The Octane Lua API can script the GUI so in principle any user can build such a tool on top of Octane. Not sure what you mean by community input but we'll shape the API together with the community as we go. The idea is to identify things that work, are rubbish and can be improved upon.

Thomas

In case you've missed it, the first incarnation of OctaneRender 1.5, aptly named OctaneRender 1.21,
is available in the Release Candidate Testing forum (for licensed customers only)

Re: OctaneRender 1.5 Animated deformable geometry with Alembic

Our final preview for 2013. These are some experiments showing that the Octane standalone version is now also able to import Alembic animations with animated deformable geometry and render them in real-time using a Lua script:

Hand with tonysculptor skin shader from the LiveDB:

Real-time rendered Gangnam style, the most cringe worthy hype of 2013 (or was it 2012?):

Each character in the following video consists of 66,000 triangles and there's 730 of them, totalling almost 50 million triangles all rendered and animated in real-time:

The hand animation is attached and works with Octane v1.23 and upwards

Head over to our Release Candidate Testing Forum to download and try the latest standalone build (licensed customers only).

With Alembic support, Lua scripting and the entirely new node system, Octane now has a very solid foundation for animation in place, so prepare for some really nifty features in early 2014.

We want to thank all of you for your relentless support throughout 2013 and we can ensure you that 2014 will be huge for Octane.

Best wishes and cheers!

The OctaneRender team
