I'd like to know how long did it take for the transformers model to export and voxelize ;) This looks too sick, if it's as affordable as they made it look we're going to see a lot of new great shorts and films and stuff.

I bet RS will start to do things faster from now, since Otoy will pressure them (not that I want them to be) to finish this asap; it's not like every single other renderer won't go to the cloud sooner or later...

hello all, thank you for taking time to check this out and leaving some feedback.

Just to reassure everyone, Otoy always had its own separate resources (developers/equipment/software) set on cloud stuff even before the acquisition. We are definitely on course as features in the cloud-based service can only go as far as what's in the true SA version :). The team is a separate division altogether - just as Radiance promised everyone about "changes", the OctaneRender Team remains intact... and even better with the additional support.

Also, remember, the cloud isn't just an ipad app. What the cloud also does is to make it possible for the gadget savvy to view or run big stuff on smaller gadgets whether it is by remote login or a tiny app.

@gabrielefx - same here, and we'll try to arrange that one

Lastly, the cloud is distinct from our roadmap so that one won't be discussed here for now. And price is still 'tba'...

I'm going to need a lot of resources for calculating my Lamborghini animation.
Thank you.

Maybe ask some forum guys here with their small render farms. I'm sure they can jump in for a small fee. :)

Yes This is a good alternative, but that would require me to share the source files, isn't it?

I noticed in the demo that there was a link to Maya, almost like Octane was a built in renderer. Is this something that is only available for the Maya plugin? Or do other plugins have that ability too? I'd love to have a live link to Cinema 4D or Blender. Because at this time when I go back to my scene and make changes, it sets up a whole new rendering and I loose my previous scene info.

The demo showed our 3DS Max plugin. When using a plugin, users can edit their scene directly in Max while they can see it being rendered by OctaneRender. The only plugin currently available is the 3DS Max plugin, there are a few plugins for other applications in development.

The exporters on the other hand export the scene from the modeling application to open it in Octane Standalone.

Example1 (in 2012):

100 pro users like me need the power of 8 Teslas to produce (every day) 2 high resolution and complex renders at 3500x2500 in 8-10 hours.

If I want to render my 3500x2500 printable image in ONE minute I need the power of:

2.400 Teslas...fired for one minute.

For 100 pro users Otoy needs 24.000 Tesla gpus to render at the same moment 100 high resolution renders in one minute.

On the 4th quarter 2012 probably we will see the new Teslas. The New Teslas will be 3x faster than the GTX580.

Example2 (in 2013)

For 100 pro users Otoy needs 8000 Tesla gpus to give us realtime feedback of high resolution renders.

Probably my file will go in the queue list and I will wait 99 minutes. In this case Otoy will need only 800 gpu and we will say bye bye realtime.

Otoy: don't buy now any Tesla, just focus on software.

Thank you Roeland. This is the answer I was looking for.

this is a really good example of the problem we see with cloud computing.
cloud is not a mystical thing thats flying in the air to solve peoples problems. you need a lot of high end hardware to run that will cost a hell lot of money.
100 users are quite low, expect much more then the service starts. it will be interesting how otoy will overcome the problem with to much users which have to render at the same time and the money you will have to pay to put on top of the renderlist (reminds me on flylo with their special early bird boarding time card ;) ).
from the leaked ad cloud service prices it looks like its ok to render selective images but it will cost you alot of money to render animations. money that you would better invest in your own renderfarm if you need renderpower the whole time.
so i cant wait to see what otoy will offer, how much it cost and how they will prevent the users for waiting in the line then they have to get the output as fast as possible.

If Otoy knows how to distribute rendering on trillions of gpus surely it will implement its technology in Octane standalone.
Many rendering web services have failed.
I think that Refractive will release a pro version of its plugins for $999.
Cinema or broadcast world needs more professional features and we will pay for all this stuff.

Believe me, we will see two versions of Octane.

Yes of course. But where is the problem? If you use a Renderfarm you would also need to upload the sources there.
Make an NDA or whatever if you feel uncomfortabel with privacy. I don't think people will go out with your stuff an leak it around. :)
