OctaneBench Competition - Turbocharger - Final

Hi All!

Here are some early renderings of a turbocharger.
I'm not sure yet but maybe I'll try to add some background objects (eg. put the turbo on a table, add some tools). I'll experiment with it if time allows.
All renderings below 2,5 mins on a Quadro 4000 (stopped at 500 samples).

Cheers,
Szymon

Hi,

nice idea. I think you shut put something more in the scene, or something where the turbocharger belongs to.
Maye you will find time to model a computer case where the turbo is connected.

Ciao
Andreas

Thanks man! Your idea is certainly worth giving it a try.
BTW good to see progress of your work - I love the theme that you've chosen!

cheers,
Szymon

Plugging a turbo to a PC seems illogical - but it works!

Thanks for the advice Andreas.visjon

This is probably one of the last mods I will make to this project.
PT 6, 350 samples take 120 sec. on a Quadro 4000.
Only procedural textures used.
Zipped ocs and objs fit under 6 MB.

Hi,

Should you want / need to shorten that render time further you could try lowering the PT max depth value (to no less than 2) + you could also set a bigger ray epsilon value (to no more than 0.1). Balancing those two could save time with minimal quality impact.

All best

Thanks eidy!
There was indeed some space for the changes that you've suggested. Ray epsilon went up to 0.00025, max depth - down to 5 (the light losses were small enough to be partly compensated by raising the lamp power). Unfortunately anything beyond those values caused some visible quality issues.
I also noticed that there is no need to set the max samples value to more than 250.
All this saved over 30 seconds of rendering. The time is now just below 1:30 on a Quadro 4000.
Cheers,
Szymon

Funny thing - raising the field of view to 65 saved me 2 seconds of rendering time (currently 1:28, Quadro 4000).
So, this is the final version of the turbo.

Good luck everyone
