I bought the plugin for Revit, but I really don't like to navigate around in 3d, inside Revit.

But I might need to give it a try again.

In 3ds design I just use WASD this works fine and cost nothing

I´m an avid gamer myself, and like Archicad in that regard, but if work with many different type of software it´s a very practical sollution.

Autodedsk tries to enforce a stupid sollution, that could be done so much more simple, but I´ve learned to avoid frustrations over idiotic sollutions, so have one foot in each camp

I think the OctaneRender for Revit plugin is a vastly better workflow than the exporting options you've discussed. It does everything you can do in Standalone,

I agree that the plugin already does quite a good job, but up to the current version of the plugin there still are some workflow glitches, for example: When you enter family edit mode in Revit, Octane render closes, and also the plugin interface _though being easy and clear to understand_ but its not that intuitive to navigate and adjust.
The stand alone seems like a nice place to work in especially regarding materials, and it can free up Revit to continue the work especially if you are in the middle of the development stage of the project and just wanted to fire a render to see how it looks.

This was put in place for the initial release for robustness purposes, but this limitation will be lifted at some point - you will be able to go into the family editor and your Revit scene will continue rendering. Potentially in the future, if you navigate from one Revit scene to another whilst rendering, the Octane render will continue for the original scene.

and it can free up Revit to continue the work especially if you are in the middle of the development stage of the project and just wanted to fire a render to see how it looks.

Otoy have announced that in a future version of Octane you will be able to export from the plugin and import into Standalone - which will make this process much easier.
