I've been working with matte paper renders alot lately and it helps to scan in a blank piece of black or grey paper and use that as source material to create a subtle roughness and bump. it might be good to experiment with using that for translucence in your tests too.

Thank you for the feedback :) Of course, using a high resolution scan will add a lot more details, I can't agree more. The thing is I was just experimenting to get that translucent look and wasn't that much worried about everything else. As you can see in the setup, I didn't even add reflectivity to the parts of paper coverd with ink. But I think that you will agree, that even using some (not so HQ photos) of money found on the internet, produces amazing results in terms of paper surface :) . Here is a close-up shot:

I think I even could increase the bump strength a bit more for it to be more pronounced. But of course if it was a commercial project where paper is in focus, you would add as much detail as possible.

Have a nice day :D

I would go the same way: just add another mix node and mix a strip texture with the current mixes. Just make sure to use it only for the transmission. I suppose it should be completely invisible in diffuse channel. At least judging from the second image. As for the first one, I would create a new material separetely for the strip (maybe make it glossy with some colourful gradient in the specular channel) and use a mix material to mix my current material with the strip material and used a B&W mask as amount.

To be honest I haven't seen the new banknotes in real life, so it is pretty hard to judge how it really interacts with light.

Wow! I lke the approach. Does anyone have an idea how to apply a similar effect to a "thick" Polygon or for example to a box? Right now it only works on single polygons with no thicknes .. right?
I would be glad if someone had an idea.
