Having some fun with the environment fog

I was just playing around with the environment fog to see if I could make something really big. This image just uses a HDR file for the environment image and I made a rock with 3D-Coat and Substance Painter. I had a real hard time getting the HDR to match the lighting of the rock. Gamma of 1 would make the HDR bright and the rock really dark, Gamma of 2.2 would make the HDR too dark and the rock too bright. I ended up using a gamma of about 1.3 to get it to somewhat match. Any insight into this would be great, I'm not sure if it's a bad HDR or something I'm not doing right in Octane?
