The Pilgrim

Hi,

I promised to come back with something a bit different, well still a archiviz but another style ;)
This is a project I had in mind since a while and finally decided to work on.
As you probably guess this is a tribute to one of the most fabulous rock progressive group.

Technically :

Quite everything is CG except the background landscape which is a photo.

The battersea power station was the main work, I didn't find any blue print for it and had to modeled it based on poor reference images but all in all it seems more or less ok.

The flying balloon pig and the girl clothes have been made using Marvelous designer.

The girl is based on a DAZ3D character.

For trees I used my own tree generator script, I could have used bilboard for the far trees.

I modeled some low poly vehicules and containers mainly to fill the space, they do the job as long as they are far but I wouldn't do any closeup on them ;)

Modeling : Blender 2.62
Rendering : Octane 2.58c
Rendering time : The render has been made in 3840x2400, as Octane is really fast in outdoor scene, those images were cooked in about 30 min using path tracing and direct lighting.

Postpro :

I rendered the scene with alpha background and added the sky in postpro
Leakings on the wall of the power station have been made in postpro to avoid huge texturing work.
Mixing of two images, one rendered using path tracing and lit with an hdr map and another rendred using direct lighting and lit with sun light.
Lighting improvement.

Excellent  Great funny idea, as always. I'm amazed by your modeling skills and the care you bring to your textures.

hi nice idea, but i don't like the result this time.
IMHO, Light on the character and on the building does not look in line with the enviroment.

Thanks guys :)

Yep, this sky doesn't help but I wanted something with an atmosphere similar to the disk cover. I did some improvements as indeed I forgot to apply the sun pass on the character ;)

impressive work on your homepage! looking very good, same level as bertrand benoit ;)
couple of questions:

how long do these interior renderings take?
how good can octane handle larger scenes (ram wise)?
do i have to wait for larger memory on graphics card (8 - 10 gb) to use octane as production render?

Thanks RobSteady,

The rendering time varies from 3h to 6h on two gtx580
I can render very complex scenes with 3Gb depending on the geometries used, scenes with trees or strong displacements will obviously quickly fill the ram, so with some optimization on geometries and on textures size you can really render some comple scenes.
You can definitely do some production render with GTX580 including 3Gb.

Cool! And how big are the resolutions?
What about proxy support?

That's pretty cool. I've always wanted to model Battersea.
I like the atmosphere too. Almost surrealistic.
