Here's an erector set that I modeled after my son received it for Christmas several years ago.

Rendered at 1680 x 1050 at depth 16 for 2000 samples per pixel. 20 minutes.

Very good (I like the blurry ground with the touch of blue color)
But there's some artifacts (MLT related ?) that gonna move when rendering animation and cause noise.
You should put a wood floor instead of that plastic thing. Like if it was in a children room.

Anyway good modelling skills :)

Enrico, I used your #2 HDRI file.

Sam, It is on a wood floor and you could see it nicely as diffuse. Since MLT is not implemented yet (will be soon though) I was having some firefly issues with various settings. I liked the overall appearance with this setting even though it washes out the floor.

Just wondering out loud, how would this compare to say CPU based vray?
In speed and quality.

Since I don't have V-Ray, I cannot comment. I do know that to use Lux render to get this quality would take me over 10 hours at least having all my machines (in my signature) networked together working on it.
