Why does hair and I mean non-strand-based hair but normal hair now render all translucent now?

Or have I stuffed around with too many settings again?

Is this an existing scene that rendered differently in an older version of the plugin?

No, new scene, but the hair has been used with Octane with earlier versions of the plug-in without any issues.
But, now just having said that and loading an earlier scene with the latest test version of the plug-in, the hair renders fine.
It must be some setting in the scene that causes it to cause the translucency of the hair.

So... with the working scene, I've saved the render and environment settings to a file... loaded the latest scene with translucency, loaded the saved render and environment settings from the working scene... and... the hair renders translucent... sigh... this is getting too hard now. :)

Further to this ...
A blank scene with base G8F no imported render or environment settings... same hair... Octane render... translucent.
Same scene as above, different hair from the same merchant... translucent hair. OutofTouch merchant
Same scene as above, different hair, different merchant... NO translucency... Emma and Jordi
Same scene as above, yet another hair from another merchant... Translucent hair... Merchant AprilSH

So there is something external to the render settings and environment settings that are particular to certain hair and the way the merchant has configured the textures/shaders... perhaps?

The difference is most likely in the Octane material used for the hair. Are you relying on the auto converted material? It's possible the auto conversion process is introducing too much transparency, but I wouldn't advise relying on it anyway.

You could try saving the material from one of the cases that looks OK to your presets and then applying that to the hair in the scene where it doesn't look good.

Saving the material from "working: hair and then placing it onto a "non-working" hair fixes the translucency problem.
How do I know if I'm relying on "auto-converted material"? where is the toggle in the preferences for that?

If you are not manually changing the materials then you are relying on auto converted materials. When an object is added to the scene, the plugin makes an attempt to create Octane materials to approximate the Daz materials. Currently, this conversion is pretty low fidelity and is more of a starting point for you to go in and set up the Octane materials to get the look you want.

It looks like the auto conversion is doing a particularly poor job on that hair object for some reason. I have a plan for a major overhaul of the material conversion system but it won't be ready for a while.

If you want help setting up your hair material for Octane, I'd suggest asking on the (unofficial) Discord server: https://discord.gg/Vb9HcNVA.

Thanks for all that. Something will come up soon, it's so intermittent when the materials come in right and when they don't.

This is a colour space issue, it happens all the time now days, the plugin is not consistent about it at all, and the 2022.x based version of the plugin seems to mostly get it wrong for opacity maps, setting their color space to sRGB.

To fix it, select the image node connected to the Opacity pin of the material(s) and set the 'Color space' to 'Non-color data'.

I've tried very hard with my limited skills at material handling... but for the life of me, I have no idea where to select and change the color space... I'll dick around for another couple of hours.\
Thanks for your help... wish me luck. :)
