Cant face my lights in the right direction

I need some help getting lights to face in the right direction.

I am using a flat plane as the emitter in the model
I have used a black b ody emitter
I have set the texture to RGB colour and set blue for an underwater look
Distribution is set to an RGB image and I have loaded an ies file
UV transform is set as standard
Projection is SPHERICAL (should it be UV or linear but these don’t seem to make a difference)
When I use the rotation input I can only rotate in one direction side to side but cant rotate forwards and backwards no matter how I set the XTZ, ZXy etc.

Any ideas would be great.

Also, it would be great to have some standard lights and targets as an option. A spot light, point and directional light with some targets to make them easy to place would save so much time.

To rotate the IES light, use the X and Z sliders of the Rotation pin in the Sphere Transformation node.

Hi Alfabruce,
I agree with you. We need absolutely more type of lights in Rhino plugin. For me this is one of the most important feature that I would love to see in the next release.
I inserted my "wish" in the Feature Request.

Octane requires light to be emitted from a physical object - so a Directional Light is not really applicable (unless you use an Area Light a long, long, long way away). Similarly, Spot Lights are non-trivial, and would require actual geometry to control the softness, etc, and IMO it would be easier to simply use an IES file. A point light is possible, done by creating a very small sphere.

Hi Paul,
yes I know that Octane requires light to be emitted from a physical object. But I think that every render engine needs fast and simple way to light a scene. And ies are not so easy, fast and versatile to use.

Hey Guys, don't forget that this is an unbiased engine - using "artificial" light sources would bias it - that is why they are not present.

Using IES lights btw is super easy for me:)

Hi Mac, ies is easy to put in the scene but every ies has a distribution so I can't control the cone of the light in a simple way.

A software very very similar to Octane can control the cone and the softness of the light. I can not say the name of this software or I risk being deleted from the forum :-)

In the past I used Octane for some product animations only (since in direct light mode it render glass and metals faster than my main render engine). At the moment I explore Octane 4 and I'm impressed by the speed for interiors. The denoiser is a big step forward. Now I would like to add some spot lights to my scene, but I'm disappointed how difficult it is. Often I need some simple spots where I can adjust the cone angle. Did I understand right, that I need to external adjust IES lights for this simple task? And if I want to turn the light, than I need to adjust numerical parameters? Looks like a difficult workflow.

Also I used the "create emitter" button for an area light. I got a simple Rhino emitter with a very limited control only. Ok, I manual create an emitter material. There I tried the Distribution parameter and I expect to focus the lighting, but it seems to change the brightness only.

So, only I can hope there will be improvements for a simpler light usage.

An idea - could the little free tool "Creator IES" or something like this not be direct added to the Rhino UI? The created IES files could be internal saved to the Rhino file. And finally the IES could be aligned to the surface normal, so that the user can direct rotate the surface if needed.

I might be wrong but I think that this ies app was created by Karba (f-Storm creator) :-)

Anyway I'd like to have a simple cone light control which could be converted into a ies file. I don't think it is difficult to do
