Hello Paul,

I just want to report that the material editor is behaving very very problematic here right now. I would say that I have a freeze at an average of 30 minutes, at least 90 % when working on, or especially "leaving" the material editor tab although I try to avoid the situation where the preview in the ME window is still generating ...

Do you think that there is anything I can do to improve the situation? Should I remove the ME from the tab and use it from its own separate window?

thank you for any feedback

best

Andreas

Hi Andreas - just giving McNeel a prod now....

You can try turning OFF "Auto-Update Preview".
Or try setting thumbnail size to Small
Or if neither of the above help, float the Material panel as a separate window.

Let me know how you go pls.

Hello,

Just a quick question:

I am using the octane sun system, is there a way to modify the relationship between the sky and the sun light ( basically this would affect the darkness of the sun shadows).

Right now the only way I figured out to partially archive this was to increase the turbidity value, but that's somehow limited.
The other approach was to use a hdr image, but the problem here is the limited flexibility concerning the vertical angle...

Hi Andreas - have you tried increasing the sun size? Do you want the shadows lighter or darker?

Hello Paul,

I would think that increasing the sun size would lead to a softer shadow edge , not a lighter shadow.

Actually that's what I am mostly trying to achieve,
When using hdr images I am varying the gamma value of the map to archive this.

Hi Andreas - the darkness of the shadow is based on the light absent from that surface - so if it is too dark, that probably means there are not enough reflective surfaces directing light into the shadows. Perhaps a big reflector off the side of the camera would fill in the shadows? Might help to see a sample of what you are trying to do - but to answer your original question, there is not a slider to control the sun shadow power.

Hello Paul,

yes after 14 years of visualisation, I am well aware of the fact that the shadows are the absence off light :-) (no offense ...)

Maybe I was not able to explain myself clearly, what I wanted to ask is :

when using the octane sky modell, can we increase the sky light intensity without increasing the direct sun light intensity?

... in case it is not possible yet, make it a wish please, since it is something I really need often, thanks!

Hi Andreas - does Turbiity not do this for you? As you move towards a Turbidity of 6, more of the sky color is used for lighting and less of the sun color.

Hello Paul,

yes, turbidity helps, but right now it can only be raised to a maximum of 6, if it would be possible to increase this value it might basically do what I want to do (clients are often afraid of "dark" and "unfriendly" shadow although it adds depth and necessary contrast ...)

best
