Guys, when I wrote what I did above, I intended it to be my last post here on the Octane forums, because, like I said, I have better things to do. However, I was very curious to see what others were saying about LW being dead etc...
After reading a couple posts by folks that are seemingly in an existential and/or mid-life crisis over the death of LW, I want to assure you guys, as someone who is 50 and worked in LW for about 20 years professionally, that switching completely over to Blender was simply incredible in virtually every way. I wish so much I had time to tell my story, but I don't. Just believe me that once you get over the first couple learning humps, the rest happens at a very fast clip, and is quite enjoyable too. At every turn, you will be asking yourself: "how the f*ck did LW not have this feature or that feature" or say "what I just did in minutes would have taken f*cking eons to do in LW!!..". And before long, you will be like: "Light..Who?...".
I can honestly say that there is not one single thing I
hate about Blender. Not one. Some things I would change personally, but there is simply no hate. And I have to tell you, as someone who used Blender as a middleman between LW and WebGL for years (and only for that), I used to hate the goddamn thing. I was like "are you effing kidding me.. right-click to select!!.." and "omfg, who designed this retarded UI!!", etc etc.. 2.8 was a sea change. I recognized that when it was released.. I jumped.. and never once looked back. My work is now so very enjoyable, tons more efficient, and truly has never been better. Blender feels like an extension of me. I could have never once felt that way about LW. Never.
Anyone who is, for any reason, holding on to any kind loyalty or love for LW, with all of its warts its thoroughly retarded, ass-backwards and archaic ways and methods is woefully uninformed of just how bad LW truly is.
The Switch is the only way to find that out I'm afraid. In the end, any future LW version, could never, ever have competed with hundreds of devs who are on the bleeding edge, and working towards the ultimate 3D workflow. Period.
Again, if you are a little older, your worries of switching to Blender (or something else) are definitely understandable, for sure..
but I want to promise you, that if you jump over to Blender and embrace it
completely, and commit yourself to learning it with everything you've got, you can be very proficient at it within weeks, like I did. It may take months to know it inside out and be thoroughly proficient, but it will be worth the effort more than I could probably adequately articulate in a couple paragraphs.
Go for it bros! I'm outa here!
