Polygon side and opacity

Hi there. I've been trying to get the polygon side procedural to work on a closed mesh, where the polygons facing outwards are transparent and the inside face is opaque (like you flipped a closed cylinder in modeller).

The polygon side renders as expected on a plane. Test surface, pink on one side, blue on the other. When I make the opacity on the pink side 0%, it renders black on the cylinder but the plane behaves as expected. I have messed around with the path tracing settings with no luck. Is this the way it is intended to work?

My aim is to replicate the old LW trick for outlines, where you make a copy of an object and 'inflate' it by a small amount using normal move. Rendering in LW i can get any colour I want on the inside face, but in Octane I am stuck with black.
Cheers.
