Rendering for compositing

I'm trying to render my main object separate from the ground/BG I set the ground material to matte and it gives me what I want other than changing what my main object looks like since its no longer reflecting the ground object. How to keep it in the reflections but only have it catch the shadow?

Thanks
Ben

Hi,

For this kind of workflow you should try to work with the layers feature:

I was able to get it to render 2 passes for the different layers but it takes way longer to render, still not sure how you use the extra passes. I'm guessing they're built into the exr? If they are, I've never been able to figure out how to work with multilayer exr's.

Each layer with all its defined passes should be exported to an individual multilayer EXR file (or a set of files, if you are not working with this file format), with the suffix selected in the render target root node options panel "Layers" tab.
