Octane and large Haze effects are difficult to achieve. I have tried different techniques. This technique is using a large cube with scattering which looks ok its just too thick........when fine tuning the density value, it goes from too thick to completely vanishing, with nothing in between....

any ideas around this?

You can actually achieve the result your looking for in the environment node now. There you can use the volume ramp to function like a gradient and reduce the fog where you want it.
