"Update Materials" crashes f10 render

Postby rustyippolito » Fri May 26, 2017 6:52 am

I have a scene with a fluorescent lightbulb flickering off and i am animating the emission in the octane emission node to achieve it. If i render frames using IPR everything is fine. As soon as i try to render the sequence using f10, it renders the first frame and then Lightwave crashes before it starts the next frame. If i un-check "Update Materials" it renders, but my light doesn't flicker off. I am now rendering in "Full scene reload" and it seems to be a temporary fix, but it's a pretty big scene so it adds a lot to the render times. Is there anything i can do to alleviate this issue in "Scene update" mode?

hi,

you have to activated "update materials". (under Update Scene) in your RenderTarget. Than you go to your light bulb object and load under object properties in lw the octane object properties function. you find there a function named material update. activate it!
than it would be render with the "Update scene mode".

The crash is a bug for sure. Can you please send to me a scene to reproduce this problem here?

Also if you enable the log file in the plugin options panel, perhaps we could see the exact point of the crash, to know if it is related to one of the scene objects or if it is another issue.

Thanks,

Unfortunately i can't send this particular scene because of an NDA (and it's also pretty big), but i will try lwguru's suggestion once the render completes :) If his tip doesn't work, i will try to cut the scene down to just the basics to send you for debugging. Thanks for the quick reply (as always).

Okay-

I tried lwguru's idea and it also crashed. I enabled the object level "update scene" option, and also the render target level "update scene" option. This resulted in the same crash (right after writing the first frame of the sequence). HOWEVER, there's one thing i did not see in lwguru's tip but tried anyway... I ALSO enabled the "only materials in enabled objects" option in the render target. I am now 6 frames in and the render is still going without a crash:) :) :)

going to bed now... looking forward to waking up to a fully rendered scene:)

So probably the crash problem is going to be related to materials updating from another object in the scene, not to the fluorescent lightbulb one.

The log file could help with this issue. Probably in the log we are going to see the object that was being updated when the plugin crashed. This could help to cut the scene down to reproduce the problem.

Thanks,

ugh! It still crashed last night... after just 11 frames. I will try to gather the scene up for you to test out today...

Unfortunately this scene comes with a 40GB TFD cache file so instead, i am going to try to recreate the issue with the same objects and try to send you a lighter scene to debug. stay tuned...
