if the resolution is so hign that You don't have enough vram, the render will fail & You'll not be able to do anything - so Vram does help if You need bigger resolutions.

thats very helpful info!
Can you please tell us what is the max resolution we can render with 780Ti with 3GB?
I am planning to render 4098x2160 resolution animation sequence, and my textures are approx. 1.7GB in that scene.

thanks :)

don't know for sure how to calculate & I can't look for numbers in program, 'cos at the moment rendering some tests.
For the record 8k Square seems to take 1.8GB of vRAM. So You should be just fine =)

I like to join this tech conversation. Currently i am rendering on a single GTX 780. The new 780ti with its 2880 cores is a bit faster. Does it make sense to buy another GTX 780 or can i take full advantage of the improved performance of a GTX 780ti in dual GPU mode?

You can take advamtage of all the power that is inside the card - I mean if it's faster You'll render faster - cards don't need to be the same. so in the end everything is 'bout the money You have to spend =)

Makes me wonder, too ... what happens if your scene needs more than the 3 GB I have on my 780Ti? Does it warn? stop? crash? swap? slow down?
