flat image for backplate

hi -

I am sure this is out there somewhere but I cannot figure out how to project a regular image (not hdri)(not spherical) in front of the camera to use as a backplate. I've added a second environment and have the image visible, but it wants to project as spherical - is there a way to do this, or do I need to apply the image to a plane? and if so, how can I lock the camera to the plane?
thank you

I think this needs to be done but adding a plane to the back of the scene, adding the image to the plane's material mask, set the Project Type to Front Projection and the Project Camera to the current camera.

Thanks

I tried that, but it seems like the shadow catcher only works with images in the environment - so a shadow catching plane is visible when in front of the backplate image. is there a way to change the projection type of an image in the environment? or is a different approach needed?

Hi. If you want to use the environment as a backplate image, then you will need to use a spherical HDRI map. Alternatively, you can drag the Kernel->AOV Output Group property onto a workspace, and setup the compositor as follows. You need to turn on Kernel->Alpha Channel.

But after that it will be not visible in reflections right ?

Please see https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=79486 for updated details on backplates.

If you follow Paul's last link, there is an example using the new "sample pos to uv projection" with an environment texture.

This will work with a shadow catcher since it's using a visible environment, and still allows you to select which rays affect the render.
