OctaneRender™ 2021.1 RC 1

Hi all.

This is the first release candidate of 2021.1. It fixes more bugs and adds the last features for this release cycle. From now on the focus for 2021.1 will be to get it ready for production.

It is still not a stable build, so we advise to not to use it for production purposes.

Please make sure to use a NVIDIA Studio driver with version at least 456.38 on Windows or 455.23 on Linux.

Changes since OctaneRender 2021.1 XB3:

Improvements

  • Added "Curvature texture" which maps the local curvature of a geometry to the range of [0 .. 1], where no curvature results in 0 (black) and high curvature in 1 (white). In comparison to the dirt texture, you can limit the curvature detection to convex or concave curves or include both of them. The calculated curvature is also more consistent at small sample counts. You can then use a gradient map node to convert the curvature texure value to into something more exciting, as in the example below:
    Image
  • Added option "Edge tint" that allows you to tint the reflections for glancing angles on metallic and universal materials and metallic material layers. This only applies to the artistic and IOR + color modes.
  • Added blend mode "Reoriented normal" to the composite texture. The idea of that blend mode is described here. This example scene shows the difference between just adding the normal textures (which internally adds the deviations from the undestorted normal) and using that blend mode in the compositing texture. As you can see, the difference is not overly dramatic, but noticable:

Bug fixes

  • Fixed clipping material being recorded as a surface in render AOVs.
  • Fixed clipping material rendering incorrectly when the clipping material has a lower priority and is overlapping a SSS medium.
  • Fixed rendering of scenes where the camera is inside objects with a medium, nested dielectrics or clipping material.
  • Fixed incorrect hair rendering (see viewtopic.php?p=402806#p402806 and viewtopic.php?p=402807#p402807).
  • Fixed incorrect hair colors when rendered with the new color pipeline (see viewtopic.php?p=402789#p402789).
  • Fixed incorrect output color with option "Histogram invariant blending" on the chaos texture node (see viewtopic.php?p=402753#p402753).
  • Fixed incorrect denoiser output in scenes with SSS materials.
  • Fixed render failure with PMC at certain resolutions (see viewtopic.php?p=402549#p402549).
  • Fixed saving of the alpha channel when "keep environment" is enabled (see viewtopic.php?p=402575#p402575).
  • Fixed crash when exporting to FBX using the geometry exporter with "Preserve Octane material data" enabled.
  • Fixed loading of Octane materials with UDIM textures from USD files.
  • Fixed anisotropy artifacts when there is more than one triangle per face, e.g. after subdivision (see viewtopic.php?p=402614#p402614).
  • Fixed issue in batch render job graph that caused the main AOV instead of the denoised main AOV being saved. If you run into this problem in existing scene, please recreate the batch render job graphs they will not be updated automatically unfortunately.
  • Standalone: Fixed crash in undo-system after undoing a node creation + edit of input node of a pin on that node.
  • Standalone: Fixed renaming of the node graph after undoing an ungroup.

Wallace mentioned a fix for this crash should be in the next update, but Im not sure if it made it.

It's still crashing for me

Yes he fixed two things, but they either got broken again or weren't complete fixes as when I tried today the problem came back. He is going to look into it again tomorrow.

(If you disable AI light the scene renders fine)

Vijay mentioned a fix for this issue
viewtopic.php?p=402303#p402303

I think it may be part of the "Fixed incorrect denoiser output in scenes with SSS materials.", but I'm still seeing a color difference in the denoised output.

It's not as drastic now, but the denoised output is a bit more blue.

Fantastic update guys, been waiting for curvature...

Would somebody from Otoy please share a screenshot of the the gradient trick used to clamp the values as alluded to in the description.

Or even better, a simple .ORBX

Thanks

You should not need to clamp the output values, if you are finding something unexpected could you please share a sample ORBX for us to reproduce?

Hi funk, sorry about that. I have fixed this (again) and this should be fixed now in the next release.
