Dear all,

We are happy to share our first release candidate build of Octane 2020.2. Note this is is still not a production build so please do not use this for production purposes.

This release includes now all features which will be part of the final 2020.2 stable release. This includes fixes from issues you reported in previous builds as well as some functional updates according to your feedback. Note there are still some fixes could not make it to this release but we are making good progress and they should be coming before this goes into production. Thank you all for your support.

Should you find any issues with this release please report using this thread so we can make sure we provide you with the best feedback.

Make sure to use a NVIDIA Studio driver with version at least 456.38 on Windows or 455.23 on Linux to use this version. No driver updates are required for macOS 10.13 (CUDA).

This version supports the new NVIDIA Ampere architecture on Windows and Linux. Kepler cards with compute model lower than 3.5 are just supported on macOS.

OctaneRender 2020.2 RC2 has superseded this build.

Changes since OctaneRender 2020.2 XB5:

New features:

  • Added new built-in texture node Chaos texture which generates a texture output by generating a tiling pattern from an input texture.

Bugfixes:

  • Fixed potential application crash when using composite AOV nodes.
  • Fixed issue causing incorrect results when using absorption medium in the environment.
  • Fixed issue causing mediums to render incorrectly with nested dielectrics.
  • Fixed issue with surface and volume scatter nodes not being applied in some cases.
  • Fixed issue with adaptive sampling when using shadow catcher stopping while the result is still noisy.
  • Fixed normals on the hyperboloid geometric primitive.
  • Fixed issue causing the local application data to be saved in an incorrect folder on Linux.

Other changes:

  • Application settings specify RTX disabled by default.
  • Renamed Ray type pick texture to Ray switch.
  • Default inputs for Ray switch are now set to 1.
  • Composite texture layers are arranged in groups in the composite texture node.

BUG: Composite node mixing up pins and layers when expanded

The composite texture is really awesome. I think it may become my favorite node. Its going to simplify nodegraphs that required chains of mix textures etc

But I'm finding it a bit buggy:

1. Add a composite texture. NOTE: If you hover over the node inputs, the far LEFT pin is layer 2 input, while right is layer 1
2. In the inspector, set layer 1 input to "checks"
3. Set layer 2 input to "noise"
4. In the inspector, right click the layer 1 input icon > expand

RESULT: The checks node expands but is attached to layer 2 input pin, which is wrong. It overwrites the previously connected noise node.

If you add more layers, and do the same thing, they get connected to the wrong pins too.

If you save the file and reload it, the composite node now has TWO checks nodes connected. The noise node was overwritten.

BUG: Vertex displacement autobump breaks if you add sheen color

1. Load the attached scene and select the rendertarget to start rendering
2. Select the glossy material and change the sheen color

RESULT: Autobump stops working.

The slave node is still failing with cuda 700 errors after adding a "Geometric primitive" in the scene.

Launching net render node (10020500) with master 192.168.0.10:1025
diff != size with diff=18, size=19
invalid message received from network connection

Would be nice if you could mention what is not fixed from reported bugs.

We wanted to release a fix for this issue in this release but unfortunately run out of time. We will try to have this fixed as soon as we can.
