Dear Octane Community,

We are very pleased to release Octane X PR2 - a major update with speed and stability fixes on macOS Catalina, and the first major release on macOS Big Sur (dev. beta) with Intel and AMD Polaris (e.g. RX 580) support*!


- Up to 10% faster: ~ 220/440 OB on Vega II Duo
- macOS Big Sur*: Intel and AMD Polaris GPU support (+other Metal GPUs supported by macOS Big Sur)


(*Octane X PR2 for Big Sur beta requires Apple developer account and closed beta access whitelist)



Octane X for Big Sur

On MacOS Big Sur we now support a full range of hardware beyond Vega and Navi AMD devices - including AMD Polaris GPUs (2012+) and Intel GPUs, instantly adding millions of new macOS systems that can now run Octane X!

Octane X PR2 - up to 10% faster


A number of fixes and several performance improvements have been made since PR1. Most notably we have pushed performance by up to 10%.

We want to thank everyone who has reported issues, and tested scenes using PR1.1 and PR1.

We are making solid movement towards the first stable release of Octane X, which will include full support for Vectron, Universal camera, Maxon OSL Noises and live compiling/JIT of user generated OSL shaders.

Bug fixes in Octane X PR2:

  • Fixed hang when enabling deep image.
  • Fixed scripted node graphs always using default settings in demo builds.
  • Fixed info passes causing a crash when using PMC.
  • Fixed corrupted renders when rendering composite materials.
  • Fixed render failure when rendering Vectron and Volume SDFs.
  • Fixed rendering using an animated universal camera.
  • Fixed crash when selecting "show in graph editor" on a pin that is connected with a large external node.
  • Fixed how portal materials are handled in info shaders.
  • Fixed a bug where autobump doesn't work properly on a mix or composite material.
  • Fixed issue causing wrong time values to be displayed in the animation timeline in some scenes with FBX archives.

Only needed for the new GPU support, otherwise all the other new features and fixes run perfectly on macOS 10.15.6.

Will we see plugins released soon? I'm still not seeing 1.1 for Blender. :cry:

PR2 plug-in SDK for Catalina just went out a few hours ago, and the PR2 plug-ins will soon follow as the devs compile for this build. We have held back on some plug-in releases in anticipation of PR2 since it introduces a lot of fixes.

Both - this requirement will be gone of course once there is a verified/stable public big sur beta that works with the drivers we need. Won't be long IMO, sorry for the inconvenience and the wait until then. PR2 on Catalina has all the same features and fixes as Big Sur for Vega/Navi GPUs.

I have a question.. I have PR1 still in my list of downloads but not PR2. is there a Catalina pr2 out separately?
So I'm confused if im in or out of the beta at this point?

works on my Mac Pro with Catalina.

On my 16" MacBook Pro with Big Sur beta, I get this

To clarify, the big sur PR2 binaries are different than those for Catalina, and as of now we can only share them in them in the private beta channel. We will post then here as soon as we have a wide public beta of big due that has the drivers needed to run Intel/AMD.
