That's correct, the new implementation will be more robust but probably slower, so we'd like to keep this as an option as it already works fine in a number of cases, which otherwise would be slowed down.

Has there been any progress on this? I haven't seen anything in the builds about it.

I think the most important thing for Octane right now is to speed up object compilation and uploading data to GPUs, it can take a while for Octane to even start rendering. Compilation should much more faster and multithreaded.
