Update for unofficial plugin soon (well, at least I hope)

Hi guys,

I'm sorry for not giving news since a long time but the last two quarters have been pretty hot with no spare time for putting my hands on Octane/Blender. I'm now on vacation for 4 weeks so I hope I'll be able to deliver some updates in a few days. Here are my plans:

- make Bucket rendering work (I'm sorry I let the button in the interface while implementation didn't even start)
- fix blender 2.58x-specific issues if any
- fix octane 2.46b-specific issues if any
- check if I can make strands export without the particle modifier (just trying, don't get excited too quickly)
- make a second branch for 'official' plugin (sticking to Refractive's guidelines for UI)

This will probably be the last update(s) until the new export format is available and I think I'll take the opportunity to go for (another) complete rewrite of the plugin for allowing fancy stuff such as distributed (network) rendering.

Please let me know in this thread if there're any outstanding issues I could quickly fix (may be you noticed stuff that was working before and doesn't work anymore). Feel also free to suggest new features, keeping in mind what is technically possible or not ;)

Cheers,
Lionel

Nice to have you back in action.
Please dont spend *all* your holidays doing it though ;)
Blender 2.59 is due out very soon.
I see graphicall.org already has Win RC builds posted for 32 and 64 bit.
Change log is here http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:R ... ngelog_259
It would be nice if the exporter was up to date for that too.
Thanks for your good work. :)

Hi yoyoz,

I must say I got a bit nervous when we heard nothing of you the last weeks concerning the blender exporter. Now I will sleep again well at night, knowing that the script will evolve (though the actual version already works like a charm...).

Nice to hear from you!

Exporting a dupli-object visualised particle system, without having to apply it, would be really cool. As for strands, they could be "replaced" by mesh objects. Yafaray exporter does it (already in 2.58) by creating triangle tubes, which shape you can specify with a few parameters:

Child particles cannot be exported yet. 2.59 will hopefully add new possibilities in the python API...

Anyway, enjoy your vacation and first of all: get some rest! :)

So far I can see, the plugin still works with 2.59 (you just need to reinstall it).

I've noticed a couple of annoying stuff however:
- particle instances have become useless for Octane exports as they don't get emitted from the emitter (I'm still testing but can't find good logic in this behaviour). If using blender's render engine it even gets worse with rendering the instance as a single particle... [EDIT] I could make it work as before but couldn't fix a broken setup....
- F12 shortcut bypass some plugin logics, so you better use the 'render' button instead

Good to see you back Lionel, as you can gather, we have all been missing you.

The existing exporter has proven to be quite robust and is still working for everything that I throw at it.

What I need now is some way of stopping Octane from using so much memory whilst voxelising. I quite often have to start using swap space after my 8GB of ram runs out.
