I'm actually unsure myself how best to allocate RAM for Out of Core. When enabling that form Stand Alone or Octane Blender the default seems to be about 4 or 5 GB. My slave machine has 32GB and I allocated 24GB to Out of Core. But I have no idea if that is the correct thing to do. Can anyone explain in more detail how the Out of Core and RAM work and what best policy is?

The Out of Core setting should be proportional to your available ram. I have 128 GB on my system and I normally set Out of Core amount to 64 GB. For sure you shouldn't go off the limit of your available ram, considering it's also used by the system and potentially other applications.
