I've read a few threads on how to make c4d's baked sculpt maps work with Octane, but I'm wondering what the latest advice is. Is there a tutorial out there? I basically want to use the maps c4d bakes with Octane and achieve as good a result as I can with a native c4d shader.

Hi,
the more critical export is for displacement map, the Normal map can be easily converted in PhotoShop.

Try to export in Intensity centered mode, then in Octane, use the Vertex Displacement mode, with Mid Level at 0.5, the same Subdivision of the Top level, and the ImageTexture at 32bit with Gamma at 1:
