Interactivity very poor

How can I speed up Octane? I don't mean the actual rendering, I mean during look dev in c4d. If I have the live viewer running, every tiny change I make in c4d has a delay. For example I click on one of the little dots to include an object in the render or exclude it, there is a 2 second delay between clicking the dot, and it's colour changing. Or I double click an Octane material to edit it, again there is a few seconds of delay before the material window opens. It's incredibly frustrating to work like this. If I pause the live viewer everything speeds up, but when I unpause the changes aren't recognised and I have to resend the scene. That then takes a very long time as Octane has to export ALL the materials in the scene even if I only have one showing in the live viewer.

I'm on OSX on a 12x 3.46GHz Cheesegrater with 1 x 1080ti and 1 x 980ti, running Octane 4.04 r2. As I said, when actually doing final renders I have no problem at all with the speed, it's just the interactivity while working that is so slow it's unbearable.

You don't need resend after unpause. Just make some clicks on viewport or elements of scene.
Other than this that sounds like you have a busy gpu operation by the heavy rendering. Are you with eGPU and set priorities for that?

Hi Aoktar, my GPUs are internal, the 1080ti is set to be the main card.

I think I've asked this before, but why does Octane have to recompute every material in a document, even if I've only got one material on one object visible for rendering? Is there a way to 'hide' materials from Octane that aren't actually going to be rendered?

It has to reload all materials by safety. But has not to reload textures on restart of rendering in Live Viewer. Measure it.

I had a hard crash during a render, and restarted the mac - since when interactivity in Octane is about ten times better. I suspect there is a memory leak going on, the longer Octane is running, the poorer the performance gets. Is there a way to purge GPU memory so I can get performance back without restarting the mac?

Rather than a memory leak, you may be on low VRAM/RAM. Just restart C4D for that and close other programs.

Restarting c4d doesn't make much difference, restarting the mac is like having a new machine and Octane is fully interactive again.

It sounds weird so! Are you using different softwares while using Octane?

Usually I have Photoshop open and sometimes Illustrator, and I always have Safari running so I can amuse myself while rendering!

Bringing this thread back as I still find interactivity is poor when the live viewer is running.

I notice that when the live viewer is running, and I'm editing materials or objects, or switching on and off render visibility for objects, the octane status bar at the bottom left of the c4d interface says "check other time 2.116" or "check other time 2.093".

Does that mean Octane is stopping me doing things for 2 seconds every time I make a change? It feels like it. What are the 'others' it's checking anyway?
