So this approach wont work with a live Loft (I'm guessing) but will work with a plane or a Loft turned into geo:

- Create your plane or surface
- Select all points in point mode and use the command "Create Cluster" (you can do Shift + C to find faster)

(This will create a cluster deformer and points of your plane linked to a null object.)
So when the null object moves it moves the points but not the plane.

- Animate HOT4D like you normally would - make it a child of your plane but ensure it is UNDER the plane cluster.

- Link the null object to your camera with PSR constraint (but only position X and Z) 0 you can find this in Character tags menu.

- Hierarchy and demo gif attached.

---

I also did a version where I make one plane 1000x1000 and used Octane Scatter to 'clone' that across a much larger plane.

This method did still create repetition ... but I kind of eased the repetition by using 2x Hot4D tags under one plane but mapping each to a separate Vertex Map that I painted (to create seamless edges when animating) So kind of like a falloff using the vertex maps.

You still get repetition but depends what you're doing with your camera move - you can get away with it in some cases. But I think the first version is probably most effective if you geo plane isn't too big.

Screens attached for the first approach.

@Brezaling

Sorry for the late response, I've been extremely busy these last few days.

Cluster is a great idea. I would just try to avoid using Planes as much as possible. Using a Plane would be better for a setup based on Octane displacement texture projected in world space. With a Plane you always end up having more tris further away from the camera, where you don't really need them (DOF or haze would make them less visible).

Worst case scenario. Just one ridiculously big Plane. 32 million triangles and still not enough detail.

Procedural setup. Constant 1 million triangles, regardless of the camera angle. Equal amount of detail everywhere.

Plane and Adaptive Subdivider. I had to use 4 A.S. plugins and It was very slow to work with. ~1 m. triangles.

Here's how I would adjust your setup. I used a piece of geo modeled using my setup. I also used xpresso on the offset of the cluster to change the size of geometry based on the Y axis of the camera and some Z offset when the Camera is looking straight down. It's not perfect but it's a good starting point.

Hi Milan,

Thanks a lot for putting this together.

I went ahead and pretty much applied this method based on your prev post - using your idea of the geo falling off in a fan shape, with less polys in the distance and the cluster rig from Valkaari, which helped to pin the HOT4D deformer down (essentially doing a world space deformation on the moving plane).

I'll have a look at what you are doing with the scaling in xpresso... but I think I've got it to an acceptable point. *attached a still of my test test render.
There's a bit of repetition in the distance which I may just resolve in compositing somehow but it's getting there for sure and rendered in pretty reasonable time on my two cards. (no crashes on geo!)

Found that once motion blur is in place, the low geo close to the camera doesn't matter much. - but that depends what your camera is doing. I'm just flying across so I don't have to worry about it too much. If you were doing a move close and then far you'd probably notice it.

Thanks for the tips!! I'm glad I was able to find you on here after I saw your youtube demo rig.

So how would you go about creating the ocean with R23? Valkaari hasn't updated the plugin since R21, what else would you use? Displacement with layered Noises?
I can live without the foam.

Thanks for any input!
