volume displacement

I am looking for a way to apply a displacement to a volume. I have searched in the help, in the forums and I can't find anything. It seems that there is only one way to do it with cinema 4D, but if it's a feature of octane, there should be a way to make it accessible from other software (maya, etc)...

Hi Maskeline,

Sorry for the late reply.

We can use Maya's native fluid and shader to generate noise effects.
Please find the sample workflow and feel free to let us know if you have any questions.

Hello.
Thank you for your reply.
What you sent me is not exactly a displacement, but a noise applied to the opacity. Besides I need to do it to a VDB... I am looking for a way to implement displacement volume in maya (or a clear way to do it in standalone), taking into account that I am not a programmer and I don't know about osl programming...
It is within the octane features (I think).

Hello.
I really don't know where to look for this information. I mean I'm just trying to apply a software feature "Volume sample displacement" either in maya or in standalone.
It's hard to understand that there is a feature that is advertised, but there is no manual, no tutorial... No answer in the forum on how to use it...
Please... Any information about this?

Hi Maskeline,

Sorry for the late reply and thanks for clarifying!

Please find the Orbx file to refer to.
The volume displacement is done using OSL textures pinned into Sample Position Displacement on the Octane Scatter nodes.

Hope you find it useful.

Hello.
I have been investigating how to do the same thing that comes in the standalone example in maya and I don't see the way to do it.
The problem is that in maya there is no entry for "displacement position", while in standalone there is. It seems that it is an option that is not integrated in maya.
I thought it would come in the next version (in 2021) but in the current beta the option in Maya still does not exist.
This raises two things for me.
- The first is that it is an indispensable option to work in Vfx that require a lot of complexity, so I would have to go back to Arnold (which is how we are currently approaching the volumes in our pipeline).
- The second is that we have a feature of the octane engine that is available in the plugin of other softwares and not in maya?

Is there any foresight to implement this feature in the maya plugin?
Any way to access that entry in the maya plugin?

Hello Maskeline,

Thank you so much for this.
Sorry! we would implement this option in the next build.
As a workaround, we can use ORBX proxy or the Orbx material to use the "sample position displacment"!
It would allow Edit volumes via Standalone Node Editor within the OFM plugin.
Note, the Node editor dialog must be closed in order to save the changes on the .mb or .ma file.

There was a way to get the node graph out of octane stand alone in maya... But I don't remember what it is, nor have I found it.
Could you help me?

Hi Maskeline,

Sure, it seems we can get the same displacement result using the ORBX proxy only.
Sorry about my previous comment on Octane VDB, we would add the "displacement position" in the next release.
