is the octane plugin actually loaded? If the octane plugin isn't loaded it'll freeze up when you try to select a material or do a render.
do you happen to be logging into your computer remotely via windows remote desktop, or something similar? certain remote desktop logins disable cuda rendering. I ran into this a while ago and it took me a while to figure out what was going on.
both of those are a long shot to fix your problem but it's worth it to check.
