phoenix FD animated emission?! Tweet

Can anyone point me in the right direction to make the emission of an explosion reduce over time? I just want a real explosion effect, where at the start the emission is high; you cant see much smoke and at the end all you see is smoke and some flames. I have tried animating the emission, the emission ramp and all i get is either a completely smokey explosion for the duration of the animation or a completely firery one! please help?!
