LIGHT PASSES Question

Something very important I have always wanted to know... when I use the drop down menu in the render window and select LIGHT PASS 1, for example... I know that is only SHOWS ME light pass 1, but it is in fact only actually RENDERING light pass 1, and therefore way way faster than rendering all of the other lights as well, OR is it still rendering all of the lights, but only SHOWING me light pass 1 ?

The reason I ask is, what I tend to do with difficult scenes is manually render different light passes by just keeping it in the regular beauty pass mode, and turning off the other lights temporarily. I find I get faster, cleaner results that using the actual LIGHT PASS system.

Hi richardyarlett ,
times to render with light passes are like beauty.
An excellent workflow, I think, to work with different lights with a single render, could be this:
viewtopic.php?f=88&t=56789&start=10#p309087
take a look at the PSD file.

Hi Paride
Yes yes, I understand the workflow and the whole light pass system. I have been using it for years and on vray. My question is very technical and specific to you on SPEED. If I have 10 lights in a scene, is it better to render them out one at a time using the beauty pass only, or just render them ALL together in one go, using the LIGHT PASS system ?

the best way would be to use light passes, but right now you should export to OctaneRender Standalone 3.08 TEST 6
https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=64362
where the clamp in light passes is fixed.
https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=64317&p=327193&hilit=+gi+clamp#p327193
or make ten beauty layer renders by creating a frame by frame animation, turning lights on/off.
