Matte objects without shadow-catching

Hello there,

I'm trying to render a volume held out by a hard surface object ( in Houdini 15.5 ) - the Octane ROP doesn't have the usual 'Force Matte' slot like Mantra and other renderers, so I looked a bit further.
The 'Matte' option on the diffuse shader sounded promising, however it ended up being the 'Shadow Catcher' switch inside the VOP shader network on the actual diffuse shader node.
Is there any way to have 'clean' matte-ing without shadow-catching too?

Thanks,
Prema

I guess you are looking for the default behavior of Octane render Layer with the beauty pass,
set up : enable "render layer", assign a new layer ID to the "matte" object and set it to be the "active layer ID", enable "invert".
