Linux version

Hi all!
I am new to octane since I just discovered about it and landed in this forum, even though a lot of names and nicknames sound really familiar to me, especially the dev's ones... ;)
Anyway, I read some of octane's features (let alone being amazed by the gallery and demo videos...) and I discovered that it is being distributed also for Linux platforms, but only 64 bit.
Is there any chance I can give octane a try on my linux 32-bit box? I really do hope so... :)

Congratulations on what seems to be an impressive piece of software!!!

Hi,

I'd recommend you upgrade your machine to a 64bit linux OS.
They are after all free, and you will be able to run much more complex scenes on it.

We don't have a 32bit linux installation in our development office at this time,
and i would rather have customers switch to a 64bit distribution as it's really much better for using octane on...

the upcoming 2.1 release will have a linux demo too . (although 64bit only at this time)

Hi Radiance and thanks for your answer.

I see your reasons and agree from a technical point of view, however upgrading hardware and switching to 64bit linux is not feasible for me at this time :(

Also, don't you think that going only 64bit (at least for linux, I see windows 32bit is supported) could prevent a not-so-small user audience from adopting octane?
Just my thought.

not sure, you're the only one who's ever asked for one yet.
is there a reason why you can't switch to an x64 version ?

Mainly lack of available hardware but since I'm too curious to give octane a try I think I'll find some, one way or another... :D

you should definately get a x64 distro, octane is very memory hungry and it you want to render decent size scenes you will really enjoy a 64bit adress space...
