What are these black areas?

Hi guys

I have several questions on this test scene I made. As shown on the attached images, the first box set are rendered nice and grey, but when I applied glossy material these black areas appears on the back sides of the boxes. Any idea what these might be? Also, how do we apply UVW map?

Thanks

it's because you have normal smoothing enabled on objects with too high angles between faces.
you should disable the 'smooth' option on the material node.

you apply uv maps in your 3d host app prior to exporting.
