Hi all

This is the release of Octane X PR7 for Big Sur. This is the first public release of Octane X with experimental support for Apple M1. It also has support for all devices we can compile for at the moment including AMD Polaris, Vega, Intel Skylake and Kabylake. We have also raised render performance even further and fixed several issues that have been found, thanks to your testing.

This release also comes with a special build: the first Prime standalone release, for MacOS only, which will be made available via the App Store very soon.

Not all builds will be available immediately, but we will add links to them as soon as they arrive.

Important: for this build you must be using MacOS 11.1 stable and newer. There were critical driver issues in MacOS 11.0.x which have been resolved in 11.

Changes since PR4 for BigSur

  • Fixed bright edge around meshes when rendering with alpha channel on and using HDR viewport.
  • Fixed a crash when connecting geometry output pins to one of the vectron operators.
  • Fixed hair material rendering black in some areas when albedo is 1 (white).
  • Fixed primitive attributes not affecting opacity when it is connected to an emitting mesh with transparent emission off.
  • Fixed OSL Camera.
  • Fixed "pin not found" log message when using gizmos with an OSL camera.
  • Fixed cryptomatte passes rendering incorrectly in 2020.1 when environment medium is enabled.
  • Fixed shadow pass changing the brightness of the main beauty pass when there are no direct light sources.
  • Fixed Beckmann BSDF is showing discontinuity at transmission 0 (black).
  • Added experimental support for Apple M1. Please install Rosetta when prompted. The denoiser is not currently working on M1.
  • Performance improvements that affect most scenes.
  • Speed improvements to HDR viewport.
  • Added a setting to allow disabling the HDR viewport.
  • Smaller performance improvements when copying data from GPU.
  • Implemented a workaround for a compiler bug causing material preview to hang forever.
  • Fixed PMC kernel.
  • Fixed OSL Projection node.
  • Fixed a crash when rendering a mix material containing a volume medium.
  • Fixed Max speed setting not being applied to motion vector AOV.
  • Fixed vertex displacement.
  • Fixed albedo texture appearing to be ignored when used with hair material.
  • Fixed normals on cone geometric primitive.
  • Fixed motion blur on vertex displaced objects.
  • Fixed hang when updating emission power.
  • Fixed AI light not improving over sample time always.
  • Fixed adaptive sampler marking noisy pixels finished at minimum samples when rendering shadow catcher.
  • Fixed pixelated baking camera results.
  • Fixed vertex displacement auto bump failing when sheen is added to a glossy material on the object.
  • Fixed DPI of rendered image in viewport.
  • Fixed film flashing white when starting a render in the HDR viewport.
  • Fixed a scrolling issue when changing film size.

Previously reported odd displacement issues still happening. This is not happening on our PC version of Octane. It appears that it's geo breaking but on closer look, it appears that's not the case. We already tested ray epsilon values and that didn't fix it.

You can see in the screenshots that the geo is not actually breaking (see fully black image--no breakage light leaking through). Somehow it's pulling in color from the surrounding, non displacement elements (notice the red BG image vs the Cream bg image). As well, the affect changes based on subdiv level (compare the two cream images and notice the artifact changes based on what level the subdiv is set to.

any feedback regarding this, OTOY? It showed up in the previous version as well (which I reported as well) but received no response in that release either. Known issue? Isolated issue? Plan to fix? No plan to fix? User error?

Hey Guys,

nice surprise to see that this version is actually working quite decent on our old 2013 MacPro. We thought we give it a try and couldn't believe that it is working and quite usable. Super cool. Not for heavy geo or texture scenes because of GPU RAM limitations, but for smaller motion graphic and light projects absolutely usable.

Thanks for the hard work, this is really amazing. Can't wait to actually work on one Mac with octane and C4D :-)

Best,

Martin
