Dear all,

We needed to release an additional maintenance update to fix a couple of significant issues. Along with that, we included some more fixes for Cryptomatte, network render, and Vectron.

A reminder: to use Octane 2018.1, you need to have a Studio or Enterprise subscription license. To use network render, you need to have an Enterprise license.

Important: we recommend that you upgrade your NVIDIA driver to version 419.17 or newer. There has been some critical fixes in this newer version.

For introductory material on Octane 2018, please see the 2018.1 release post.

Changes since 2018.1.1:

  • Fixed orientation of normal maps for triangles which are mirrored in UV space
  • Fixed crash when stopping render engine and then starting a material preview.
  • Fixed a crash during activation on some machines with RAID setups.
  • Fixed OSL camera not working over network render.
  • Fixed SDF not working over network render.
  • Allow Vectron nodes to inherit their bounds from their inputs, if the SIZE pin is not connected.
  • Fixed incorrect size and distance scaling of volume SDF objects when used as an input to a vectron node.
  • Fixed a crash when the same volume SDF is used in more than one Vectron input.
  • Fixed Cryptomatte passes for distinct nodes.
  • Fixed Cryptomatte passes that get broken when changing material and object layers.
  • Fixed material and object layers for Vectron nodes.
  • Fixed duplicated voxel counts in render statistics.

Thanks to the developers for this new release.
Especially for looking into the cryptomatte issues!

I was enjoying network rendering with earlier 2018.x releases, but v 2018.1.2 breaks network rendering.

Edit update:

Appears my issues were due to firewall setting on the router. Issue resolved.

Hi Otoy,
Paride and I discussed about poor AO light.
Can you please read about it in this post viewtopic.php?f=33&t=71475

Thank you

Maybe this is something that is suppose to happen, or maybe it is a bug.

But when you have a specular matrial with 1.000 ior and with 0.000 roughness it does not show up in the cryptomatte (I can get into why you would leave it out of the cyrptomatte, because it is opaque).
But even with a scattering medium it does not show up. (CryptoMaterialNodeName).

Another issue is that region render with some render-passes (denoised render-passes) works very slow. I am constantly disabling all render-passes when I use region render.

Yes this was designed that way, if a specular material surface has 100% transmission, roughness 0.0 and IOR 1.0, then it is considered "invisible" and the enclosed medium is treated like a volume. So the scattering effect will go into the volume render pass. It will also not show up in cryptomatte passes.

This is implemented so you can use this on meshes to create an “environment medium” with customized shapes.

If you need it in the cryptomatte pass, you can set one of these 3 inputs to a slightly different value.
