the best translator is Deep Exploration.

you export from Rhino in step (stp) format or acis (sat)
Don't export the entire scene in one step! Divide the scene in layers and save separate files. Please, check always the normals.
Then import (open) the files in Deep Exploration. You can choose two import methods: Alternative (best for flat surfaces) Recommended (best for smooth surfaces)
Choose the tessellation, try it yourself with parameters.
Then export from Deep Exploration directly in Max. First you have to choose the Max you have installed. The first time DE will try to open Max and then Max will crash. Close DE, reload it and save the file again. Max will be opened in the background.
With DE you can open directly Max files.

Tonycho, the Rhino tesselation is pretty good.
You can assign a per object tesselation in the object preferences in Rhino and check the meshes in realtime.
Pretty fast and save. I export Rhino to Octane often and never got big trouble.
You can send me a Rhino scene to check if you want.
Cheers
