i don't have any good results with beta2 + bump map (at VERY LOW POWER SETTINGS) - and any photoshop smoothing can't fix this. Please explain what could be wrong here? Wrong bump map format?
thanks for your attention!

i think there is a bump map sampling distance issue here.
i need to add some routines to our bump mapping code to handle maps with fine lines/dots like this.

i will add these to beta 2.1

Radiance, would you please, submit some .ocs files with settings that are confirmed minimal firefly, working ok, something to test our stuff in...
I still don't get how scaling works, or whether my program exports ok
this is the beggining of my .obj file

What is this supposed to mean? 18.45744896 meters? (by default settings)
Are there any issues if the scaling is all wrong - apart for the circles - that is the only obvious one.
I'm getting a bit frustrated since I managed to get perfect results on one try, but then after I felt I got it right, reseted octane, tried again, and it's full of fireflies after 6 hours rendertime..
So a scene with an hdri that works ok with interior and one for exterior.. (something with sky and greenery), does the size of the HDRI make any significance to the quality of the scene - firefly and speed wise? I'm a bit impatient testing something for more hours to find out I have no idea how to make it right..
Should I turn of glossy or specular materials to get better or faster results?

yes, those units should be in meters.
if they aren't you need to export in meters.

regarding fireflies, use the trick to make nice renders (it's the first post sticky in the resources forum) by me.
just wait a bit for our beta 2.1 update, it will solve these problems.

So I discovered interesting thing about some firefly issues.. It has something to do with roughness setting on glossy channels.. So when roughness is set at low values (blurry reflection) you get tons of fireflies on high setting it is clear with what seems absolutely no ffs. ..

The test set up was some objects on glossy plane.. so when I turn the plane to a glossy material, and set the roughness to lower than 2000 I get firefly, when above it is much better. Was that documented somewhere?

I will probably do some more tests, but please do try that so to confirm, and let the people know about it..
So it seems it is mainly affected if the floors (or probably large reflective surfaces) are glossy with low roughness setting? Try it. Actually I think it affects all materials.. Major issue, but great if it is just that, it should be fully reflective or diffuse no in between..

Specular materials and Diffuse materials with low glossiness values create scenes with more fireflies..

Diffuse with low glossiness values? Diffuse material doesnt have glossyness value adjustment in beta2 . I think you meant Glossy Material with low Roughness value

Well why didn't you make a note of that in this post, it took me a long while to find out that by accident..

I'm a professional retoucher - here's the best technique for removing fireflies in my opinion (This is is less destructive than Despeckle, which is better for removing halftone scans, not specks but it's a dated filter and not as good as other noise reduction filters). Use the Dust and Scratches filter with a high threshold setting. It will leave everything untouched and just zap the fireflies:

Before:

After:
http://grab.by/3Qc1

Obviously that's too noisy for a final image but it was just to show that Dust and Scratches can preserve image detail (low contrast detail)

So you can have relatively grainy images and only remove the fireflies. If you want to remove the grain overall, I recommend the Neat Image Photoshop filter. It's very good and I worked at a film magazine (tons of grainy images) and this was the best of the lot (Noise Ninja is good not as good IMO).
