Ok another very good tutorial from Pawel Filip blog (check his Deviantart page also)

This time its about how to equalize textures in Photoshop (can be done in various other 2d applications)
When you take photographic pictures of textures, the light is not the same in the four corners of your image.
That's bad because you can't make good seamless textures when you have different values of light.

Here's the link to the tutorial

And here's some examples, on the left its before, on the right its after the tutorial

I am guessing this would work on photos of skin textures as well...very cool.

I haven't figured out exactly how to translate this to Gimp. But for those wanting to try, you will need the High Pass filter.

This is excellent. :) I have gotten it to work somewhat in Gimp. I downloaded the plugin and it looks like it does almost all of what he describes in the tutorial. I ran the highpass filter on the image using the colour option and set the radius to 120. The image came out fairly dark so I brightened it up by re-stretching the image using the curves tool. It does strip out some of the color, so I adjusted that with the color-balance tool. I can't post images yet until I get home.

Can you post the full method you were using? I never got this to work properly. Could really use it!

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. My domain name service went out of business on me, no warning, just one day gone. I have been trying to get my domain back up and running and it turned out to be quite a long drawn out process. That and I just upgraded my operating system to the latest release at the same time.

I wasn't able to come up with one specific method, every image was different. Like I said in my other post, you just need to play with the radius until you are happy with it. The one thing I noticed is that the smaller the radius was the more color was stripped out of the image. So I would try and keep the radius as large as you can, and upping the contrast helps too. Also the "Preserve DC" option helps keep the color in the image, although it tends to make the whole image the same color. I don't think that you can get away from doing some post tweaking to adjust the color and brightness. Hope this helps.

just bumping this up so I can find it later again (been using this one a lot so thanks again for the post) :), it's a bit of a challenge to equalize a texture and so it still retains the color and the details, how about some more tips n tricks?
I've been making my own textures, have some nice teak furniture and such, and used a diffuser on the flash and took the picture at an angle so it doesn't show too much light reflecting off of it. With a nice texture threnders look that much better.. and ofcourse if I can take the picture of a large peace of texture I don't have to tile it, which adds more to making it look all pretty.
So any more tips on equalising, I've been using the actions set from this post, but the details can be lost and the color can change.. so what else is there
