I didn't know about new zealand time and i thought all entries brought in today will count. Most probably my fault. I'm really shocked cause I (a beginner in 3d) put really a lot of work in my competition entry. Of cause I had a finished image yesterday, but i thought one more night rendering will not make the image worth so I let it run over night and wanted to post it today.
Anyway I have some little hope that you will maybe still take it, just a little.
I don't have any hope to win something and because I'm more a beginner in 3d it was not my aim to win. Especially after I saw all the great pictures others made.
I just wanted to be part of it and I wanted to share my work with you guys and maybe get a tap of my shoulders.
Anyway here is comes my finished image. Clayrendering, some screenshots and some text following.

About the image:

Motivation
It starts with my idea of building a slideprojector that really (optically) works. After some test I found out that it is possible but not realistic to get out a picture without a lot of noise. I guess I have to wait for the MLT-like Octane render-engine. So instead of really projecting a slide, I put an emitting texture on the canvas.
But I sticked to small light sources. I wanted to show the magic of the light and I wanted the light to be the star in my image. I also wanted to tell a little story or more clearly to convey a feeling to the viewer.
There is also an aspect of the digital/analog 2d/3d relation. But I don't like the describing of a picture to much.
My main motivation is that one or the other might like the image I made!

The Making
Everything is modelled exclusively for this competition by me (with Blender). All texture are made (scanned) by me with the exception of the floor, the table and the smoke texture. They are taken from cg-textures.
No post production is made, except for scaling and adding the title "Memories" with gimp.

Technical Information
The scene has a bit more than 1 million triangles. The picture is rendert in 2048x1536 with 43306 samples/px.
The rendertime was long, very long :) I can't tell exactly, because the counter of Octane starts at zero after some time.
Ok, it was more than 3 days (low end hardware).

PS: Now since my tears are dry and all picture are submittet I can say it was a lot of fun and it was great to contribute to a competition with many great artist. I'm happy that I don't have to decide how is the winner. That's the real difficult task!

Good luck to everyone!

Timing:

The challenge will last for 55 days.
The competition starts now, 15th Dec 2010 GMT+12 hours (NZ and will close on the 7th Feb 2011 at 20:00 (8.00pm)Time)
