Not even talking about us poor blender users that can't afford purchasing a real 3D modeler :-)

Those are the worse! Put in there some laughable opensource image manipulating software, and you get the picture. CG bums, wasting all their money on pot and doing renders on public library computers...

(sorry for trolling, but this kind of jokes cheer me up :))

( I personally didnt know that, point me 10 people who knew that week ago )

as a linux user->just able to use 2.3v5 there were a lot of disadvantages-> a lot of materials where mixed up after closing and reloading (you got to doit in one shot, no more rexport..), only able to use 70% of vram,... dont ask me how much time i spent to hustle with 2.3 and its bugs in this challange. you better feel happy that you got advantages due to more experience with the 2.4 win version->big user base-> good bug fixes due feedback. if linux is really released at wednesday all os related bugs are hard to remove till the deadline...
The reason why the competition was prelonged was 2.4release, so this new extension is abslout fair. or do you like to work with the previous version in next comp?
sorry to say this, but please stop that way of crying its just a competition so just use the time to impove your submissions:)

good luck everyone!

SO WHAT WILL YOU SAY THAT IN OLDER VERSION I COULD GO ABOVE 50% of my vram and the current I cant get over50% on my GTX 295?? sorry to say but Your arguments are just bullcrap. Im not gonna tell You of what kind of problems I had with the windows version, but I had them too. the materials flying everywhere... rendering crashes every time in different place ( samples )... ...wrong exports... ( which didnt load - after exporting even 5 times ) ....

I have enough of that... ...I can take part in competition with previous version and it still will be better than Yours. Just have enough of all Your bullshit .... go and improve.

Im done. bye

People relax....

You're taking it too serious really like this was the final of world cup in cg rendering or something... It looks like some of you would hurt each other just to have these two graphics cards and a jacket... is this really worth of fighting and loosing reputation?

well, I just wanted to toss one more in there, because I had been wanting to try something. Not overly complex, here you go.

Guys, relax - it's not that big a deal - wow factor does not and should not affect who wins anyway so how long they've been out there is irrelevant.

With regards to if you haven't gotten something done by this point, it's just bad planning, laziness, etc..., the same could be said for someone who was crunching all the way to the last second for this weekend when the contest was really over long before that :).

Now - If mlody47 wants to be disqualified because he doesn't care? that's fine with me, because I had no chance to beat him, and I need a new graphics card ;)

Just kidding mlody :)

(hope this isn't too ball and plane for you ;) )

Gallery Corridor - Tree Installation

Postby Morat » Mon Jan 31, 2011 6:08 pm

Hi, "Gallery Corridor - Tree Installation" is my second entry (The Chair on p17 was my first).

I tried a few different gallery-themed ideas before settling on this. I wanted some really subtle lighting effects (like the reflections on the curved ceiling) to give depth to the image.

The scene and all elements were modelled completely in Sketchup for the competition by me (237,401 polys). All artwork on the walls and lamp shade are my own work. The floor is an Arroway texture and the lamp base is a sinewave material in the bump channel.

The scene is lit by daylight, two long emitters that run the length of the corridor in a ceiling recess, and the lamp bulb. Pathtraced to 23,178 samples in 28 hours, 6 minutes on a 1gb GTX 460. I had to let it run longer to get rid of as much noise as possible from the small emitter in the lamp. It's still stunningly quick for this resolution and scene complexity compared to CPU renderers I've tried

Hi,
you may remember Elisabeth Warfield, the first created character of my Flying Circus project. Elisabeth could be the daughter of Amelia Earhart and Indiana Jones !

Elisabeth is a pilot. She is a flight instructor at the "Red Geese Flying Circus" set in Canada, and a specialist in aerial photography. So, when she is not doing aerobatics with her favorite airplane named "Red goose" she is sometimes hired as an aerial photographer by the department of archaeology of the Blenderian Museum.

Archaeology is one of her hobbies, and she likes to travel around the world. So she is pleased to do this kind of works for professor Octanius !

This time, she has accepted to convey to the archeological site in Sahara some precious scientific instruments, but as the airplane she had rented can't land in desert, she has to finish the travel by car. Unfortunately, things don't always go as expected...

As they are telling a story, I will try to uplad the images in inverse number order, on several posts. Proof screens containing rendering informations will be posted separately with same numbers as images.

All the images have been rendered in 2560x1440, and reduced to 1280x720 to reduce both weight an fireflies. Everything modelled and textured by me. All textures are hand made or procedural. No photo textures used, except the clouds in background behind the airplane on the last image. This texture is made from a photo that I took myself, andis mapped on a half transparent and emissive plane, bringing some light in the scene, allowing to adjust the color of ambient light, and also allowing the physical sky of the environment lighting to pass through a bit as well.

No post-production at all. The only tasks done with Photoshop have been format reduction from 2560x1440 to 1280x720, and adding signature.

Smoke and propeller motion blur effect are textured on transparent planes. The Smoke has been created in Particle illusion and saved as a Png image. This image has been mapped on a plane placed in the scene at the location of the smoke cartridge, and rendered like any other object, thanks to the transparent alpha, allowing the smoke to cast a smooth shadow.
The view through binoculars has been taken through a rectangular plane with cutout holes, placed in the scene itself (only high aperture value and camera placed close to the mask - no external treatment), as shown on the proof screens. Except the car and the body of Elisabeth that I had made before, everything has been modelled in Blender from scratch for the competition. Elisabeth has a brand new head with facial animation.

Most scenes have between 3.5 to 5.3 millions of triangles and have been rendered in average in 2 hours. Some at 16000spx with less light have required 4 hours.

I had constantly to remove and add objects from the scenes to save memory, and also I often decreased the level of subsurfacing for objects seen from distance.

Doing that, I often had to setup again many materials lost and I wasted a lot of time ! I tried to save materials in ocm files, but never achieved to reload them. I got an error message that I don't remember, so I will have to investigate more when I'll have more time.

 Finally (but too late) I discovered a trick that I can share with you : Just create some small faces hidden under the ground and supporting materials samples that you don't want to delete from the scene. This way, you can delete as many objects as you need and add them later again to the scene, and the ocs file will keep memory of your materials settings ! ;)
