Maybe all those who venture into this thread and are working on the competition, should make a post to confirm that they are indeed participating, but (like many of us) waiting till the last days to finish it. Cause in the last one, there was a massive increase of posts in the last week or two (many people posting in the last day and also overdue because of the NZ timezone thing).

(a dedicated subforum with compulsory WIP threads, as mentioned above, would solve this uncertainty of knowing how many people are participating)

because if the theme seems too specific, its only your imagination that is too narrow at least that was my fault with this, also seeing those large-scale catacylsmic asteroid impact causing megawaves and planet-wide devastation wondering how to start something like that; maybe the teaser image radiance posted was leading a bit in that direction too but since then i have seen a bunch good/interesting/creative attempts on this theme, so i would vote to keep it, maybe extend the time a bit...

Radiance and Octane community,

Cancelling the competition would only upset those that worked on hard on an entry. i.e. your most passionate and loyal Octane users. I am like most I think, waiting to submit my entry until the last day. I am trying iterations and changing things up constantly to make the best image I can. I for one do not like to post a WIP for a competition. I feel like it ruins the surprise and could give away some of the competitive edge. I am all for helping each other with constructive criticism and technical support. That's just my preference on the matter and may be another reason why people might not be sharing images until the last day.

The theme is perfect! Its up to the artist to find a clever and provoking way to express that theme. Here is a good hint. Never go with the first idea, because those are usually the cliche ones that everyone will try to create.

I look forward to submitting my renders and seeing everyone else great work. Don't worry the submissions will come in.

PS Maybe send an official Refractive software email to customers to remind them of the deadline and encourage them to participate. Tell them of the prizes that's always great motivation.

We wont cancel the competition, that would be very unfair to those who have made a contribution.
I still do think we need to change something, we have only less than 30 renders submitted, last competition we have more than 300 !

Is everyone ok with the following:

- we remove the theme, you can submit anything you like, image or animation alike.
- we extend the competition another 2 months

In the future
1. perhaps some flexibility in the prizes.
-your choice of hardware to value of $ for mobo, PS, or graphics.
-your choice of Octane software to value of $ for standalone or plugins.
-final number of prizes dependent on number of entries, say 1 per 25? 9 max - 3 prizes each category - see below?

2. no longer than 3 months, open theme.
some skill categories
-best simple scene
-best std scene
-best complex scene.

This time as you say a further 2 months and relax the theme to encourage entries.
Give those who did follow the conditions extra weighting in the judging.

i wouldn't completely remove the theme, as this would also be a bit unfair to the current contributors (or the ones still working on something to match it). extend the time and make clear, that apocalypse can be found everywhere - from subatomic to cosmic scale i personally think that the imagination, how "apocalypse" can be interpreted, is in the end also part of the competition...

I have a simple scene to submit.Just haven't had the time to complete it.Now the Christmas Hols are upon us I should have time.Maybe everyone else is in the same boat.Possibly Expect a rush of entries on the 29th/30th I suppose.

I absolutly agree with matej and t_3,

removing the theme is not necassery. And an extention of the competition is a good idea for two reasons: It's christmas time an most of us are busy with family and all that stuff and some may need time to deal with the confusion about the theme.

so I my opinion you should keep the theme and extend the competition (one month would be even enough).

Up to now I've worked many many houres only for this competition and I'll will be working on it many more. My plan was to use the whole time that I can get for that and upload my work on the last day. If there are more who think that way the question of the low count of entries might be answered by this!

So keep going folks! And concerning the problems with the theme: Fallow the advice of metej cause every thing can be associated with an apocalypse in some way it's just a matter of evil ideas

Ok,

I would like to resuggest the following updated idea:

- extend the competition until end of march 2012
- the theme is not mandatory, you cansubmit anything you like, but apocalypse themed renders will attract more points from the jury, nevertheless, non-opocalyptic renders that are very nice can definately win, so there is a good incentive tosubmit anything you wish,

What does everyone think of this ?ok ?
