Dear Octane community,

OTOY® is proud to announce the availability of the new DCC plugin OctaneRender for Solaris V2021.1 - for Houdini 19.0.455.

The world's fastest unbiased GPU rendering engine on CUDA and Metal now integrate completely with Houdini 18.5 Solaris.

What is OctaneRender for Solaris?
The OctaneRender for Solaris plugin is based on Pixar’s USD (Universal Scene Description) and Pixar’s Hydra API to empower artist workflows across look development, scene layout, lighting, and final rendering.

-Installation steps-

Insert the OctaneRender® plugin folder path to the houdini.env file. Houdini®creates this file after launching it for the first time.
On Linux and macOS® systems, append a single line to enable OctaneRender®:

HOUDINI_PATH = "/path/to/octane;&"

On Windows® systems, you need to set the PATH to point to the plugin bin folder as well:

PATH = "C:/path/to/octane/bin;$PATH"

Setting this environment variable outputs any error related to loading the OctaneRender® plugin on the command line for diagnosing installation problems:
HOUDINI_DSO_ERROR = 2

New features

- Changes since 2021.1.1 - 01 06 22 [Test]-

  • Quick fix licensing issue

-Known Issues-
- Global texture AOV is in WIP
- Octane Color response is disabled because Hydra buffer expects linear output
- Light Linker is yet to be supported as we are investigating if we could assign the Octane light IDs internally.
However, the usual Octane light linking works as expected.

Thanks for that! Just a quick question: Is this Solaris plugin based mostly on Juanjo's general Houdini plugin (plus the Solaris part), or is this running parallel to his plugin? Just wondering, which one I should rely on mostly when using Houdini. Thanks for clarifying.

Hi Ferdinand13,

Thank you again! Right, OctaneRender for Solaris plugin is based on Juanjo's main Houdini plugin!
It would run parallel if you switch the workflow from native Houdini or Solaris.
Houdini Solaris is still under development so the native Houdini workflow is much more stable.

cheers!

Hi BK, thanks for confirming. So just to be clear, if I’ve got the latest version of the Solaris plugin installed in Houdini and I’m using the usual IPR in Houdini’s OBJ and OUT context, I’m using the most up to date version of Juanjo’s plugin? Thanks for letting me know.

Hi Ferdinand13,

NP!! Yes, it is the most up-to-date version of our main plugin for Houdini v19.0.455! :)
We would start to support the older stable builds when Octane Solaris is stable.

cheers

Scene load time seems pretty slow, I test Attic_NVIDIA scene, it takes about 40s to start render, other render engines load much faster include redshift.

Hi coresign,

sorry for the late response.
Yes, we are able to replicate the same issue and have been reported to our developer to see if we can improve loading speed.
