Ok - I've go and give the plane a UV map and see if it makes any difference.

The Selected Objects feature in the IPR is especially helpful - I haven't used it before, but now I've found it very useful.
- I'm doing the same thing.Whenever I have crash issues with instancing and a specific object, I always go back to that object and check for crap geo, single points left over or overlapping geo from an unintentional copy and paste
