2nd random bug in 4 days OctaneV4 H17.5 Tweet

EDIT1: I am just going to disable arnold renderer completely and only run with octane v4 in H17.5 for a few days, just to see if there is some odd conflict happening. Geo nodes don't automatically get any arnold tags, but cameras do... I dont know. again file lost, not great.

I don't know what is going on, but my scene is so simple I barely do anything, I had a simple scene with a pighead and a box, using an octane materials with a few textures attached. I then decided to swap the big head for the test rubber toy, but as soon as I created it houdini instantly crashed, and now it will instantly crash when I try to reopen my project file which was saved as part of the crash the first time.

this is what I am getting in my console? Now I am not necessarily saying Octane is to blame here, but I have no idea where to start so... I don't know it just feels very trigger happy at the moment, octane 4 + H17.5.

I've been trying to reproduce this problem here with several scenes and even with Arnold and other renderers installed at the same time and really I can't reproduce it, something that is frustrating given the seriousness of the problem

You are working with the current Houdini 17.5.173 production build, right? Can you please attach the Octane log file that you get after rendering something in your system? You can configure the log file in the plugin options panel.

If you can send me one of your scenes before it being corrupted, perhaps it could help to check if there is something weird on it (who knows, a weird material name or nodes configuration, etc.)

It feels super random, but I am trying to make sure I have auto save on incrementally save as well, so when / if it happens again, I will provide you with a sample scene / log for sure!

Edit: Also just FYI I am using the 17.5.173 production build, but also have a latest daily build installed to try and see if that changed / fixed anything. over the next two weeks I will stay 100% on the production build to rule out any daily non-sense too.

I have news, but no concrete result other than I have not had this issue since I disabled the Arnold plugin inside houdini... both using the "stable" build of H17.5 and the latest daily, no problems since. I don't know if maybe the GPU beta build of arnold could have been the cause, though they have also updated since, I haven't tried the new build in houdini yet. (only in max).

So, so far so good! but unfortunately not any closer at really understanding why. sorry.

I've been refactoring some functions in the plugins that could be related to the scene file corruption critical issue. Can you please download and test this new build 4.02.1.2? Remember to enable again the multi-thread scene extraction to check if the problem is fixed, but please, try to have a scene backup because, to be honest, I'm not 100% sure that the problem has been fixed.

Hi,

After a long time trying to reproduce and find the source of this issue, we've updated the 4.04.0.2 and 2018.1.2.1 plugin builds, adding new code to try to fix these rare problems related to the scene corruptions reported by some users.
